Ivan B. Genov [1956-2024]
Ivan B. Genov was born in Sofia in 1956. He was a professor of ancient and modern Greek language and culture, co-founder of the unique classical high school in Bulgaria. He had been involved in translation for decades. He studied classical literature at the University of Sofia and Byzantine Studies in Munich. He also taught Greek Palaeography at the University of Sofia. For several years he was the official interpreter in the negotiations between the Greek, Bulgarian and Russian governments. He was a teacher of Ancient and Modern Greek at the National Lyceum of Ancient Languages and Cultures in Sofia.

He had translated works by Nikos Kazantzakis, Yannis Ritsos, K.P. Cavafy, Sappho, Yannis Palavos, Panos Ioannidis, Stavros Christodoulou, Tessy Baila, ancient Greek and Latin myths, Τhe Anecdotes of Procopius and the work On the sublime of Longinus.
Together with the greatest living Bulgarian poet Cyril Kandijski, he translated (for the first time in Bulgarian, rendering the original form of the verses) the 154 poems of Cavafy – the publication will was released in April 2023 – on the occasion of the anniversary of the great Greek poet (1863-1933-2023)
He had been editor of the translations of dozens of novels by Italian, German, English, American and Spanish authors
He worked as a teacher of Ancient Greek and Latin Language and History and as a translator and editor in Sofia Publishing Houses, mainly in the publishing house “COLIBRI”.
