11 September 2025: PEN International concluded its 91st Congress in Krak\u00f3w, Poland, on 5 September 2025 \u2013 hosted in partnership with Polish PEN \u2013\u00a0 held under the banner \u201cFreedom of Words \u2013 Words of the Free.\u201d<\/em>\u00a0<\/strong> Congress serves as a reminder of the enduring power of literature to resist repression, to bear witness, and to imagine alternatives in the face of crisis.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Key decisions and announcements\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The 91st Congress was marked by major decisions and announcements for the PEN movement, including the appointment of Olga Tokarczuk<\/strong>, literary giant, activist, and Nobel Prize-winning Polish author, as Vice President of PEN International.<\/p>\n

At its Assembly of Delegates, PEN International adopted four urgent resolutions<\/strong>. These have: called on writers to defend human rights and free expression amid rampant authoritarianism and global conflict; urged writers and governments to address the climate crisis as the human rights issue of our time; affirmed the protection of trans and gender-diverse people\u2019s right to free expression and inclusion; and defended free expression in the United States.<\/p>\n

In addition, delegates approved a Manifesto on the Protection of Climate<\/strong>, signed by award-winning writers including Burhan Sonmez, Jennifer Clement, and Olga Tokarczuk, among others. The manifesto underscored the urgency of the climate emergency and its inextricable link to freedom of expression and human rights.<\/p>\n

Final key moments included the re-election of Arne Svingen<\/strong> as International Secretary, and the election of Mads Julius Elf <\/strong>as Board Member. PEN Spain, PEN Languages of Russia, Low German and Frisian PEN, <\/strong>and PEN Syria, <\/strong>were officially recognised as the newest PEN Centres.<\/p>\n

As part of this year\u2019s Congress, PEN Poland celebrated its Centenary, marking 100 years of dedicated literary activism and a steadfast commitment to defending freedom of expression.<\/p>\n

Panels and events\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

PEN International\u2019s 91st Congress brought together writers, activists, and literary figures from across the globe, including Olga Tokarczuk<\/strong>, Nobel Laureate and Vice President of PEN International; Burhan Sonmez<\/strong>, PEN International President and novelist; and Margaret Atwood<\/strong>, Canadian author and PEN Vice President.<\/p>\n

The 91st Congress also featured Volodymyr Yermolenko<\/strong>, President of PEN Ukraine; Natasha Lomouri<\/strong>, Executive Director of PEN Georgia; Adam Michnik<\/strong>, Editor-in-chief of Gazeta Wyborcza<\/em>; Taciana Niadbaj<\/strong>, President of PEN Belarus; Kristina Sabaliauskait\u0117<\/strong>, Lithuanian author and historian; Marek Radziwon<\/strong>, President of the Polish PEN Club; Pavlo Bylik<\/strong>, Ukrainian poet and PEN International Secretariat member; and Raja Shehadeh<\/strong>, Palestinian lawyer and human rights activist, in conversation with Ludwika W\u0142odek<\/strong>, Polish sociologist and journalist. Discussions explored themes of memory, migration, repression, nationalism, war, resilience, identity, and decolonisation\u2014highlighting literature\u2019s power to confront and reimagine these challenges.<\/p>\n

Other highlights included several panel discussions between award-winning writers and delegates from PEN Centres around the world. Literature Knows No Frontiers<\/em>,<\/strong> moderated by Justyna Czechowska<\/strong>, Polish PEN Club Board Member, translator and literary activist, brought together Belarusian writers Alhierd Bacharevic<\/strong>, novelist and translator, and Julia Cimafiejeva<\/strong>, poet and translator, exploring the resilience of literature across borders.<\/p>\n

Imagining Futures: PEN, Literature, and Climate Reckoning<\/em><\/strong>, moderated by Angela Christofidou<\/strong>, President of PEN Cyprus and poet, featured Kulleh Grasi<\/strong>, multidisciplinary indigenous artist from Malaysia, Lyz Jama S\u00e1enz<\/strong>, poet and member of PEN Chiapas, and Nduko O Matigere<\/strong>, Head of PEN International\u2019s Africa Region and Kenyan social justice activist, reflecting on\u00a0 the linkages between climate change and other critical social justice issues.<\/p>\n

The Freedom to Publish: Resistance, Risk, and Radical Imagination<\/em><\/strong>, moderated by Ronald Blunden<\/strong>, editor, publisher, and founding member of PEN\u2019s Publishers Circle, included Giovanni Hoepli,<\/strong> Vice President of International Publishers Association, Kerstin Almeg\u00e5rd<\/strong>, President of PEN Sweden, Ayi Renaud Dossavi<\/strong>, poet and Chair of PEN International\u2019s Young Writers Committee from Togo, and PEN Guatemala\u2019s Miguel Angel Oxlaj C\u00famez<\/strong>, poet, writer, and scholar, discussing the need for courage, resilience and creativity in the face of burgeoning censorship and risk.<\/p>\n

Other panels included Cultural Erasure<\/em><\/strong>, moderated by multi-award-winning journalist, producer, and broadcaster Samira Mohyeddin<\/strong>, with Ishraga Mustafa<\/strong>, Sudanese\/Austrian writer and founder of aspiring PEN Sudan, Mayyu Ali<\/strong>, Rohingya poet and writer, Mahmoud Muna<\/strong>, Palestinian writer, publisher and bookseller (joining online), and Ross Holder<\/strong>, Head of the Asia\/Pacific Region at PEN International, focusing on the preservation of marginalised cultures.<\/p>\n

Centering Indigenous Literature and Culture in Global Conversations<\/em><\/strong>, moderated by Miguel Angel Oxlaj C\u00famez<\/strong>, and featuring Lyz S\u00e1enz<\/strong>, Kulleh Grasi<\/strong> and Keyuk Yant\u00e9n<\/strong>, translator, teacher and cultural advisor from Chile, showcased the vital contributions of Indigenous writers to global literary dialogues.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
