It is with profound sadness and deep sorrow that PEN Greece bids farewell to Alexis Stamatis, distinguished author and one of its most active founding members, who has passed away, leaving behind a remarkable and multifaceted literary legacy.
Alexis Stamatis (1960–2026) was among those who believed, from the very beginning, in the vision of establishing the Greek Centre of PEN International. He played a vital role in the foundation and development of PEN Greece, serving on the Association’s Interim Board with unwavering commitment to the values of literature, dialogue, freedom of expression, and international cooperation among writers.
Through his novels, plays, poetry, essays, and his overall contribution to Greek letters, he left a distinctive and invaluable mark on contemporary culture. His passing is a great loss to the literary community, to everyone who had the privilege of working alongside him, and to PEN Greece itself.
The Board of Directors and all members of PEN Greece extend their heartfelt condolences to his family, his loved ones, and to all those whose lives he touched.
His memory will live on through his literary work and through his invaluable contribution to the founding and growth of PEN Greece.
May he rest in peace.
The First Discussion on the Establishment of PEN Greece

The dinner hosted by Literature.gr in honour of Carles Torner, Director of the PEN International Centenary Programme. This marked the first official meeting with PEN International and the moment when the decision was made to establish PEN Greece.
